3G & 4G Wireless Trends & Technologies

This seminar provides the student with a survey of Wide Area Wireless Networks and their role in a converged all IP telecommunications world. It provides the student with an understanding of the many nuances of competitive Radio Access (RAN) and Core network technologies as well as the Market implications of new services and global spectrum allocations. The course will compare and contrast primary multiplex cellular systems (FDMA, TDMA, CDMA, OFDMA) as it covers the evolution of cellular architecture and equipment from first generation through QoS and broadband friendly fourth generation systems (4G). The session then continues with a technical & business overview that comparatively describes and rationalizes the various approaches of CDMA including MC CDMA (cdma2000 1xRTT, 1xEV-DV, 1xEV-DO Rev 0, A, B) DS CDMA (UMTS, Rel 99-08, HSDPA, HSUPA) and OFDMA (UMB, LTE, WiMAX). Finally, other competitive and complementary technologies such as Wi-Fi, WiMax, IMS, FMC, and UWB & Bluetooth are discussed. Interspersed throughout will be fresh discussions regarding new services including but not limited to; Push to X, LBS, Mobile TV, Mobile Payments, Surveillance, and Social Networking.
